What Basketball Stars is

Basketball Stars is one hoop, two players and a shot clock. There is no roster management, no season and no five-on-five — just a half court, a caricatured pro on each side, and a possession that ends the moment somebody scores, loses the ball or runs the clock out.

Everything hangs on the shot meter. Hold the shoot key and a bar fills; release it inside the green band and the ball goes in. Release early or late and it does not. That single mechanic is why a match stays tense to the last possession and why getting better at it is so obvious from one game to the next.

The game shows its own prompts on the court the first time through, and the tutorial can be restarted from the menu at any point.

The three ways in from the menu

  • 1 PLAYER — the campaign. Opponents get better in a way that exposes exactly which part of your game is weakest.
  • 2 PLAYERS — the reason people still open this game. Both players on one keyboard, no account, no lobby, no waiting.
  • QUICK MATCH — one game, straight away, against a random opponent.
  • TUTORIAL — movement, shooting and blocking. Worth the ninety seconds if you have never played it, and skippable if you have.

Five things that win matches

  • Shoot from a standstill. A drifting shot narrows the green band. Stopping for a fraction of a second is worth more than the extra step towards the hoop.
  • Block on the release, not the motion. Jumping early is what a pump fake is for, and the dunk that follows is on you.
  • Take the contested three over the contested two. If they are going to contest either way, take the shot worth more.
  • Use the dash to create separation, not to drive. A step of space widens the meter; a dash into traffic just hands over the ball.
  • Watch the shot clock, not the scoreboard. Most losses are a rushed possession with four seconds still on it.

Frequently asked questions about Basketball Stars

What is Basketball Stars?

Basketball Stars is a one-on-one street basketball game. Two caricatured pros share a half court, and a possession ends when somebody scores, loses the ball or runs down the shot clock. It is short, fast and built around a shot meter rather than a simulation.

What are the controls?

Arrow keys move. Press and hold the shoot key to fill the shot meter and release it inside the green band — that is the whole skill of the game. The same key steals and blocks when you are on defence. Player two uses WASD and their own action keys.

Can two people play on one keyboard?

Yes, and it is the reason the game is still played. Pick 2 PLAYERS from the menu: one side takes the arrow keys, the other takes WASD, on the same machine with no account and no lobby.

What is the difference between 1 Player, Quick Match and Tutorial?

1 PLAYER is the campaign against progressively better AI. QUICK MATCH drops you straight into a single game against a random opponent. TUTORIAL walks through movement, shooting and blocking, and can be restarted later from the menu if you skip it.

How do I actually make shots?

Release inside the green band on the meter, and shoot from a standstill or at the top of a jump rather than while drifting sideways. A contested shot narrows the green band, so creating a step of separation is worth more than getting closer to the hoop.

How do I block without fouling the whole possession away?

Jump as the shooter releases, not as they start the motion. Early jumps are what let a good opponent pump-fake you off your feet and walk in for a dunk. If in doubt, stay down and contest — a contested shot is already a much worse shot.

Is it free, and does it need an account?

It is free and there is no sign-up. Press Play and it loads in the page.

Does it work on a school Chromebook?

Yes. It is a browser build with no plugin and no install, served over ordinary HTTPS. It wants a keyboard, so a laptop or Chromebook is a better fit than a phone.
