Football Masters — the build here is the Euro 2020 edition — runs the same engine as Basketball Stars with the same three-option menu: 1 Player, 2 Players and Quick Match. Two characters, one pitch, one goal each, and physics that are only loosely interested in realism.

The 1 Player campaign is structured as a tournament rather than a ladder of one-off matches, which gives it more shape than the basketball games have.

Scoring

• Volleys beat ground shots. The keeper reads a rolling ball much better than a dropping one.
• Strike while the opponent is committed to a jump — both characters are slow to land and that window is where most goals come from.
• Do not chase the ball into your own half. Standing between it and your goal wins more possessions than tackling does.

Two players on one keyboard

This is the format the whole madpuffers series is built around and it remains the best reason to open any of them. One side takes the arrows, the other WASD, and the game prints the prompts on the pitch.

Matches last a couple of minutes, which is exactly right for the kind of session where somebody is waiting for a turn.
